character information
● name: Ragnar Lothbrok
● canon: Vikings
● canon point: Post 1.08 "Sacrifice"
● age: 31
● (canon) background: here
● abilities: farming, fishing, hunting (tracking, bow and arrow), ax and shield fighting, sailing and navigating, commanding a group of warriors, horseback riding, has learned to speak Old English
● strengths: From a very young age, Ragnar was well known in his village for his intelligence and cunning. Outstanding members of the Viking community often become renowned because of great deeds, victories or creations. Ragnar's first notable victory, and the source of his namesake Lothbrok, involved him thinking up a very inventive way to defend against an enemy's notorious attack in order to defeat the infamous warrior. He prefers well thought out plans of attack, even devious or underhanded ones, to ineffective brute force. This way of strategic and critical thinking makes him a good commander, able to use his men's strengths to his advantage and to exploit enemy weaknesses.
More than just intelligence, Ragnar is naturally very inquisitive and open minded. He has a deep desire to experience different customs, places and people. Naturally, being a viking, he also wants to conquer those places, but more than that he simply wants to see and experience them. On the other hand, he's prone to questioning old tried and true, traditional ways of doing things in favor of new ideas and methods. This can make him clash with those who value tradition and resist change. He also seems to obsess over discovery and exploration. Once he's heard tales about new places he hasn't been, he often does everything in his power to go there. Although he has a penchant for raiding the new places he goes to, he's surprisingly receptive to learning about different cultures, religions and peoples, and seems to genuinely want to understand them. He has a deep desire to know more about of the world around him.
Lastly, Ragnar is a force of nature when it comes to how relentless he is. Some might argue this quality is as much a weakness as it is a strength since it often means he absolutely refuses to give up even when a fight is all but lost, but Ragnar's unrelenting personality has mostly been a strength thus far. Often times he's out-manned by his enemies but ends up beating them through sheer determination. This attitude has kept him fighting when close to mortally wounded and becomes one of his most feared and fearsome qualities as a warrior and a leader.
● weaknesses: Ragnar's biggest, glaring weakness is his unwavering, unapologetic and unrelenting loyalty to the people he loves. Wait, loyalty as a weakness? In Ragnar's case, it most definitely is because he lets it cloud his otherwise very reasonable and cunning decision making. Ragnar lets his single-minded loyalty and love for some people blind him to the point of sacrificing tactical advantages, favorable positions, public favor, and his own well-being in very careless ways. It also leads to him forgiving people or looking the other way in a way that others would possibly consider completely foolish. This loyalty definitely encompasses all of his children, which he has a special soft spot and would do anything for, his brother, and a small handful of trusted friends.
As forgiving as he is towards his small inner circle, Ragnar has no mercy for anyone outside of it who would speak ill about him or act against himself or his loved ones. He is vengeful and violent and has a terrifying, quiet, icy rage. Arguably worse than the loud, obvious kind of anger that is easy to read and gauge, Ragnar will often say nothing and seem not to react... until he brutally and unapologetically cleaves the offending party's head open in public without so much as batting an eye. His revenge is usually just as brutal, bloody, unapologetic and epic. It seems the overkill is less about making an example out of the person and more just simple, unbridled rage.
Lastly, Ragnar can be insufferably cocky and smug. At the best of times he's simply confident, or at least comes off as very confident in himself, his capabilities and his decisions. Self doubt isn't something he often experiences and, if he does, he certainly never lets anyone else see it. The reason why this is a definite weakness is because of the negative attention it almost always gets him. He can't just simply win a fight or charm his way out of trouble, he has to be a smug asshole about it, which just makes his victory sting that much more. Not surprisingly, this often paints a huge target on his back.
● job skills (optional): He'd let them know he could fight, farm or help with physical labor where needed.
● housing (optional): No preference.
● network username: ragnar (yeah, he's really creative... and also maybe doesn't understand the concept of usernames)
● network sample:
[The video starts mostly focused on the fabric of a tunic, zooms in a little and blurs, and then zooms out enough so that most of Ragnar's face is on the screen.]
So... [His accent is obvious, something vaguely Scandinavian and he looks distracted, or maybe just uncertain as to what to say.] I've looked around this place, the place they've given us to stay. A bed. A chest for storage. A chair. A table. This is all good. [Before saying more, he gets up slowly and makes his way into a rather intimate place - the bathroom. People would immediately recognize the set up and look of the place as one of the bathrooms in the Community Housing. The video moves over the various utilities - sink, shower, toilet.]
I can make some guesses as to what these are for, but... if I'm being honest, it is still just a guess. And, um... [He moves out of the bathroom and walks towards the kitchen area.]
These? [He does a pan of the room.]
Basically, I am wondering if anyone with experience regarding these things would not mind showing me what they are for. [He doesn't look particularly pleased about having to ask for help, but at this point he's decided it's necessary.]
